Dominic Davies: To Cage

“To Cage” is an intense photographic study of the artificial/natural environment of the zoo. Shot over a period of four years, “To Cage” explores the ambiguous spaces of distorted scale that constitute the major zoos of Europe. Drawing on his experience collaborating with the design team v23–famous for album and promotional art for groups like the Pixies, Lush, and the Breeders–Dominic Davies uses his exceptional visual skills to capture the staged reality of the zoo. His images capture the space’s inhabitants as living trophies fit to be visually consumed, and offer a remarkably honest–and at times disturbing, even frightening–picture of humanity’s relationship with nature.
