This book’s eleven short stories come from different angles toward a central theme: the difficulty of remembering. There is the phonetics professor who increasingly hears spoken language only as unrelated sounds, as he understands less and less what those sounds mean when joined into words and sentences. I forget: therefore, I do not exist, he surmises. The reader readily sees how important memory is, only to see the characters experience profound dismay when it turns unreliable, tenuous, fleeting.
