Early lung carcinomas are often missed at the first examination in spite of being visible on the chest film. Detection of such changes is still largely an art, although based on scientific principles. The author sets the scene by describing relevant features of the normal image of the chest, illustrated by numerous roentgenographs and instructive drawings. Other sections of the book deal with alterations which may signal presumptive carcinomas at an early stage. Among various factors influencing detection of subtle changes the important role played by the central and peripheral pulmonary vessels is emphasised. Oblique views promote a more genuine understanding of the 3-dimensional architecture of the pulmonary vascular tree. They can also visualise tumours which would remain hidden otherwise. The book is written mainly for general radiologists and chest physicians. Due to its partly novel approach to the subject it is useful also for teachers of radiology and for prospective super-specialists. 128 illustrations.
