The Great Singing Lakes: A North American Fairy Tale

At “nearly nine-going-on-ten”, Jessie Martin lives in the heart of the Great Lakes. Seasonal activities on their mixed farm, at the one-room country school, and on the long walks between shape her reality. Her imagination is caught, however, by her mother’s fairy tale of a little princess who climbs her castle’s highest tower to listen for the music of encircling magical lakes. Jessie identifies with this princess. Substituting their windmill for the tower, she lives out her dream in the reality of the family farm of the thirties. Directed to the 9-12 age group, this story holds strong memories for many grandparents.
