The Holocaust Years: Society on Trial

This new collection of readings is designed to serve as an introduction to the extraordinary event in human history known as the Holocaust: the Nazis’ brutal extermination of more than 6 million Jews and other “undesirables” during World War II. It is a painful, shocking, and heartrending story. But it is a story that must be told.

Why did so many people perish? Why did the world remain indifferent to their plight? Where does the responsibility for the Nazi terror lie? What does the Holocaust reveal about human behavior? About minorities? About leaders and their followers?

Included are eyewitness accounts of the death camps, memoirs by both victims and their oppressors, documentary materials, selections from writers such as Elie Wiesel and Anne Frank, poems by Yevgeny Yevtushenko and the children of Terezin, and readings in many related areas, providing a full view of the most inexplicable tragedy of twentieth century.
