Uncle Antoine died Tuesday, the eve of All Saints’ Day, about eleven o’clock in the evening, presumably. The same night Colette tried to throw herself out the window. At about the same time, it was reported that Edouard had returned and that several people had seen him in town. All this created a stir in the family, gathered for the first time in many years.
