250 Years of Lomonosov Porcelain: St. Petersburg 1744-1994

Ranging from snuff-boxes to monumental, multi-figured centerpieces for the Tsar, the display of masterpieces featured in this book reveal Peter the Great’s fascination with porcelain–the “”white gold.”” Porcelain was invented at the court of Saxony in 1718 which led some 25 years later to the establishment of the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg. The tradition of fine manufacturing established there continued through the Imperial and Soviet eras, but it was the demands of the factory’s Imperial and aristocratic patrons in the 18th century that led to the wonderfully high artistic and technical standards that are still upheld today.
