An Etymological Vocabulary and Study of LA Estoria De Los Godos, 1243

Lassiter (Spanish and French, Southern U. and A&M College of Baton Rouge, Louisiana) offers a detailed study of one anonymous of several popular Romance versions of Historia Góthica, the first general history of Spain, completed in 1243 by Toledo archbishop Don Rodrigo Ximeniz de Rada. Considered more a paraphrase and summary than a translation from Latin to Spanish, it contains omissions and variations beginning with the prologue and increasingly as the text proceeds. She first looks at don Rodrigo and the writing of the two texts, the surviving manuscripts, and the language of the Estoria de los godos. Then she offers a vocabulary analysis and etymological vocabulary, and discusses words not directly from Latin. The bibliography and index are slender.
