Appalachian Trail Guide to Central Virginia

One of 11 official guides to the Appalachian Trail, each of which includes a pack-sized book and up to seven separate, water-resistant maps in a resealable plastic bag. This volume covers about 225 miles of the famous footpath from Waynesboro, Virginia, at the southern end of Shenandoah National Park along I-64, to the West Virginia line and the New River at Pearisburg–all within the George Washington and Jefferson National forests (with a stretch paralleling the Blue Ridge Parkway) and including a major crossing of the Great Valley of Virginia south of Roanoke. The three full-color maps at a scale of an inch to a mile include elevation profiles and topographical contours, along with mileage logs and emergency-contact information. The book features detailed trail descriptions for each section, illustrations of many views, locations of shelters and water sources, and rich background on the history and natural features of the varied landscape found here. This edition was updated in 2001.
