China Maritime Customs and China’s Trade Statistics, 1859-1948

The records of the China Maritime Customs service can be used to illuminate trade as well as the contours of local production and local impacts of larger economic events. Lyons (economics, Cornell U.) explains how port-specific data can be obtained from the records and what use can be made of them. He illustrates his points with a case study of the tea trade.
