With the emergence after the Civil War of the unique character known as the American Cowboy, came an equally unusual, even sententious language. Out of these colorful characters evolved a language just as picturesque as they were. But the language of the cowboys, in the broader sense, was the language of frontier society including not just the cowboys, but the cattlemen, merchants, gamblers, prostitutes, entertainers, dependents, desperados, and all of those people who were associated with the cattle trade.
