Juan de la Cuesta is pleased to offer you a work that most Cervantes scholars have heard of, but few have the edition of John Bowle (Salisbury-London, 1781). This edition marks the beginning of Cervantine studies.
John Bowle is the first to call Cervantes a genius and his work a classic. Bowle is also the first to edit Don Quixote in a systematic, scientific way. No one before him based his edition on the original Cuesta editions. He is the first to collate and provide variants of multiple editions (four of Part I, and three of Part II). It was he who discovered that Cuesta printed two editions of Part I in 1605. His edition is the first with textual notes, explanatory notes, numbered lines, and indexes. He is the first to provide a map of Don Quixote s Spain.
This edition has never been reprinted. Cervantistas interested in the history of Cervantine studies and in the birth of Hispanic studies as a discipline will find it of value. In it you will be able to see how much later authors Pellicer, Clemencín, Rodríguez Marín took from Bowle, often tacitly.
Bowle devoted himself to his edition. He read all the books mentioned in Cervantes text that he could locate something no one since him has done. In addition, he read or skimmed a very long list of other books that had the potential of elucidating points in the text. As a result, his notes are a treasure-trove of information, that demonstrate how learned this first Cervantine scholar was.
