This book endeavours to describe the historical setting in which such pre-eminence was achieved and maintained over a period of one hundred and sixty years. This is not a scholarly work of professional historians and indeed the scholarship of many others has been copiously copied in its compilation. As for example, this introduction itself, has borrowed extensively, almost verbatim, from the book authored by Patrick Peebles entitled “Social Change in Nineteenth Century Ceylon”. Many erudite scholars and savants have from time immemorial written the history of Sri Lanka. This book is not the work of historians but of lawyers who have, amidst their professional work, endeavoured to record, as amateur compilers, a facet of the modern history of Sri Lanka.
