French Music in the Early Sixteenth Century

This work is a description, reconstruction and discussion of the repertory source – a French manuscript made at Lyons circa 1520-25 as the private collection of a music copyist. The manuscript contains 280 compositions, sacred and secular, from the period 1450-1524 with Loyset Compere, Alexander Agricola, Antione de Fevin; Claudin de Sermisy and Clement Janequin as the prominent composers. Besides discussing the many-faceted repertory, volume one studies the circulation of music in the early-16th century, and the relationships between popular songs and courtly chansons and between provincial music and music of the musical centres. Volume two is a “Thematic Catalogue” and volume three contains “Transcriptions” (an edition of 106 secular and sacred compositions, all but a few unique).
