Geologists from many institutions summarize their collaborative efforts over the 15 years to fill in the details of the geological evolution of the Mojave Desert region in southern California, how it relates to bordering geologic provinces such as the Basin and Range and Sierra Nevada, and how it has responded to plate-boundary effects during the Phanerozoic. The general outline has long been known, but the lack of detail has made it convenient to explain surrounding problems by assuming structures in the desert that no one has actually found any trace of.
