Housing the Japanese Worker: Employer-Provided Housing in Geographical Perspective

The direct provision of housing to employees is a neglected area of study both in conceptual literature on employment, the question of housing in geography studies, as well as economics and other disciplines, and more specifically in writings on contemporary Japan. This study explores aspects of the development of employer-provided housing in Japan in the context of the functions it performs and the problems it has been designed to address, and reflects on the broader theoretical and practical implications of Japan’s unique experience with this particular housing form. This book is a complementary volume to the author’s Relocating the Japanese Worker (Japan Library 1995).
