The Marshfields were the most influential family in the small town of Elam, New York, in the mid-1800s. As most families of the “upper crust,” the Marshfields had skeletons in the closet and the attic which were wrapped in dirty little secrets. Cunningham D. Marshfield II thought that the way to keep them hidden was by strong control of his family. Cunningham D. Marshfield III knew that the way to father’s money was by playing the good son while living like the devil. Carlton D. Marshfield felt that freedom was worth being disinherited. Margaret, the wife of Cunningham D. Marshfield II, would have traded all the wealth for a loving family. A small girl, Alicia, imprisoned and kept hidden in the mansion, was the most injured party.
