In 1891, the 25-year-old Rudyard Kipling, newly risen into world fame through the publication of , and other stories of India, set off alone on a tour of the southern hemisphere. For two weeks he was in Australia, mostly in Melbourne, where he was received with all the curiosity and interest belonging to a celebrity.
