Language and Culture in Conflict: Problem-Posing in the Esl Classroom

Language and Culture in Conflict expands Addison-Wesley’s Second Language Professional Library with a practical resource book for the adult ESL/ABE professional. Based upon Brazilian educator Paulo Freire’s problem-posing approach, the books suggests the development of an ESL curriculum from student’s cultural conflicts, social needs, and fears in learning English. Theory develops into the presentation of practical thematic classroom units covering such topics as immigration, health, family, and money. Nina Wallerstein has taught ESL in the San Francisco Bay area, in San Jose with a Freire community education program, and in Brazil. For the last several years, she has devoted much of her time to giving workshops on the problem-posing approach to ESL and adult educators throughout the U.S. and Canada.
