Mono Lake: Mirror of Imagination

Mono Lake lies at the base of the Sierra Nevada’s eastern escarpment. The lake supports dense populations of brine shrimp and alkali flies, which feed hundreds of thousands of nesting and breeding migratory water birds. Tufa formations, calcium carbonate sculptures formed underwater by freshwater springs and exposed by dropping lake levels, fascinate lake shore visitors.
