It is an account of the early days of the Cuban revolution, the transition period between Batista and Castro. Ruben the main character, is a reluctant participant in a plot to assassinate the commander of a regiment based not too far away from the mountains where Castro and his guerrilla forces operated. Ruben became involved in the revolution against Batista even when he despised Castro. Ruben met Fidel at the university, when both were students, and soon learned that he was a gangster and a sociopath, ready to do anything to acquire power and fame.
