Night of Our Fathers

As Ramsey Naab takes to the Appalachian Trail in an attempt to elude the FBI, he chronicles the adventures that have led him there. Coming to terms with the legal predicament also demands he scrutinize an oft-difficult relationship with his father, Hook, and consider the influences of two lost loves. After being thrown from a horse, news of the death of Claire Milisen, Ramsey’s childhood sweetheart, is concealed by his family. The deception sets a tone of distrust between father and son that persists through the boy’s teen years and affects his choices of friends and behavior. Through his writing, however, Ramsey comes to understand that there are two sides to every story. Kellogg’s format of point-counterpoint takes us through an almost natural progression of ever-worsening scenarios as an array of colorful characters, including the charismatic political activist, Maggie Bean, ultimately lead Ramsey into a showdown with the federal government.
