Notting Hill & Holland Park Past: A Visual History

Notting Hill and Holland Park are both areas of Kensington, but of entirely different natures and history. Holland Park was developed first around the mansions of the 17th and 18th centuries, and has always been fashionable. Notting Hill, much of it built in great style as though emulating Holland Park, has had ups and downs. In the 1960’s the old high street was torn apart for modern development and later in the north the building of the Westway overshadowed and blighted much of the area. And yet, to compensate, Portobello Market has expanded and flourished, symbolically and in effect catering for both the affluent and the impecunious. Both these areas are dealt with in a comprehensive text containing many illustrations, most of them published for the first time.
