Drawing upon recent feminist and gender theory, Gaitet (literature, U. of California, Santa Cruz) examines the writings of French novelist Jean Genet. The focus is on the two areas which she contends Sartre’s Saint Genet does not adequately sex and politics. The first half of the text analyzes Genet’s novels of the 1940s, while the second half deals with lesser-known texts dating from the late 1960s onward, including the posthumously published Prisoner of Love .
