Schizophrenia from a Neurocognitive Perspective: Probing the Impenetrable Darkness

To a large extent, the origins of schizophrenia continue to be “wrapped in impenetrable darkness.” Schizophrenia remains a mystery, but nearly a century’s worth of investigations have turned up some clues that can be followed in two directions. We may opt to look inward to examine the neurochemistry or neuroanatomy of the disorder. Or we may decide to look outward to determine how the disorder affects the patient’s functioning in the world.
