Often associated with Stratford and London, in fact, Shakespeare traveled throughout England, and moved in a much wider world of influences than is commonly thought. Many believe he spent long periods in Catholic Lancashire, and when the playhouses were closed because of plague or politics he would take to the roads, seeking patronage. Shakespeare would have visited many of the great houses and counties — each a kingdom of its own — and the would-be kings and queens who ruled over them; as well as have been influenced by the England that he knew — one of field and hedgerow, of town and steeple, folklore and history.
