Six Indian Novelists: Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan, Balachandran Rajan, Kamala Markandaya, Anita Desai

This study which tries to explore the vistas of portrayal of non-Indian characters in the Indo-English novels of the first generation Writers – Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao, R.K.Narayan and Balachandra Rajan, Kamla Markandaya and Anita Desai, highlights the various approaches of these six writers,so as to create newer dimensions in Indo-English writing. The question logically probed at is thate when Anglo-Indian writers themselves fail to comprehend India, how do the Indo-English writers venture to explore non-Indians are always the Britishers. Further it highlights the treatment of the non-Indians suffer from”marinated bile” to use Rushdie’s phrase, when it comes to their interaction with India? Why do they fall into a despondent muddle of Psychological inertia and absurd responses ? All these areas are probed for the first time in this genre of critique on Indian writing in English.
