This book combines archaeological investigations, archival research, and interviews with descendants to document Apache scouts at Fort Huachuca from the late nineteenth century until 1947, highlighting the role they played in history, from the settlement of the West through World War II. The authors follow the scouts on expeditions in pursuit of Victorio, Geronimo, and the Apache Kid, and with Pershing’s expedition into Mexico in 1916. They present an often personalized picture of Apache accomodation and resistance to cultural changes wrought by the scouts’ participation in American military operations and their dual roles as Native Americans and modern soldiers.
