The Stuff Dreams Are Made of: Housing Provision in Australia, 1945-1960

At the heart of the great Australian dream of the 1950s stood the family home. Yet, from the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s the nation experienced its most severe housing shortage this century. Using a sociological approach, Alastair Greig explores the economic, social and aesthetic factors influencing this phenomenon. He analyses the attempts by industry and government to overcome the post-war housing crisis and offers explanations for the flourishing Australian dream of home ownership.
