The demise of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was an event of unparalled precedent, not only for Russia but the Western world and the United States as well. The authors trace the problems inherent in coming to terms with Russia’s new status and the difficulties encountered in establishing new relationships. They believe that Russia’s size, natural resources, populace, and strategic location between Europe and Asia almost certainly guarantee that it will reemerge as a major power. The authors conclude that the West, and in particular the United States, should do all that it can to assist Russia to join the community of nations as a responsible member.
