Shaw considered Eugene Brieux of France the greatest playwright in Europe after Ibsen; and Brieux’s rather shocking studies of social problems certainly suggest Ibsen, especially Brieux’s Les avaries (Damaged Goods), which discussed sexually transmitted disease.
